Opening Reception: Gallery One Three Seven: Hills Snyder

Thursday, September 17, 2009, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.:
Help us celebrate the opening of Hill Snyder's mini-art exhibition in Gallery One Three Seven, a 1.37 square foot gallery, curated by Sharon Engelstein.

There will be a performance by Buttercup, a tight indie rock outfit also from San Antonio, that evokes the satire of Village Green-era Kinks while pouring out the shaky southern emotion of an early Neil Young. They are prolific songwriters, centering their sound on vocal interplay and embellishing it with varied instrumentation such as hand bells, glockenspiels, homemade gadgets, and telephones.

Screening: Shorts by Jason Villegas and Matango*

Friday, September 18, 2009, 8:30 p.m.:
* Special location: Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer, Houston, (713) 523-3669www.domystore.com

In collaboration with Domy Books, Curator Valerie Cassel Oliver will introduce video shorts by
Jason Villegas. And stay after to view Matango. Washed ashore after their sea vessel is
damaged in a powerful storm, a small group waits out the repairs on the island. Hungry and
weakened, they feast on mushrooms found in their temporary dwelling; unfortunately, the fungi
turn out to be not only poisonous, but also eerily transformative, turning some of the castaways
into flesh-eating fiends. 1963, 90 min., free admission

SFSA will offer workshops, lectures, and skill sharing classes. For information on the Saturday Free School for the Arts sessions, please contact Sasha Dela (713) 551-3497, info@theskydive.org.

In July 1969, the space race ended when Apollo 11 fulfilled President Kennedy’s challenge of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. Al Reinert’s documentary, For All Mankind, is the story of the twenty-four men who traveled to the Moon, told in their words, in their voices, using the images of their experiences. Forty years later, it remains the most radical, visually dazzling work of cinema yet made about this earth-shaking event. 80 min.

In the Shadow of the Moon is an intimate epic that vividly communicates the daring and the danger, the pride and the passion, of this extraordinary era in American history. Between 1968 and 1972, 12 American men walked upon the moon’s surface, and they remain the only human beings to have stood on another world. In the Shadow of the Moon combines archival material from the original NASA film footage, much of it never before seen, with interviews with the surviving astronauts, who emerge as eloquent, witty, emotional, and very human. Directed by David Sington. 110 min.

CAMH’s Teen Council introduces filmmaker John Boorman's futuristic cult film Zardoz (1974, 105 min.), starring Sean Connery, and will lead audience discussions afterwards. Teen Council member Abbey Campbell writes:
The 1974 science-fiction epic Zardoz is all at once experimental, technologically advanced (for the mid-seventies, anyway) and unabashedly bizarre. The film's absurd post-apocalyptic premise coupled with its complete lack of self-consciousness makes for a hysterical show. Do not expect a clear plot or an unambiguous message, but prepare to be entertained.

Best known for his iconic painted portraits of ordinary people, Barkley L. Hendricks proves himself to be an equally masterful photographer. Heavily influenced by the work of legendary American photographer Walker Evans, Hendricks has used his 4x5 format camera as a “mechanical sketchbook” to skillfully record the landscapes and people he has encountered in daily life, weaving a narrative reflective of life’s fleeting moments, frozen in time.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

DumpTruck is a Houston based open artists collaborative formed in 2008 by Noelle Mason, Cory Wagner, and Mat Wolff. “We use performance, video, interviews and whatever means necessary or at hand to investigate the process of making art, the endeavor of maintaining a creative practice, and the absurdity of the artist’s life. We actively engage members of the art community in an open dialogue and collaborative effort to further explore and research that which is the idiom of art making in Texas.” DumpTruck members Wagner and Wolff will present a slideshow, artists’ talk, and general discussion of popular contemporary topics. They warn, “This presentation will be a fully interactive extension of the ongoing discourse that is our practice for the delight and participation of the audience. We recommend you bring your toothbrush as this will be your best first date ever.”
