Performance: Kalup Linzy

Thursday, January 24, 2013 | 7PM

Special Location: Houston Museum for African American Culture

Introducing Kaye (Romantic Loner) (2012) debuts one of Kalup Linzy’s newest characters, Kaye, a forlorn artist coming to terms with a series of failed relationships.  Using the video as a backdrop to Kaye’s experiences, Linzy will perform the soundtrack created for the Romantic Loner project (a feature length film), accompanied by a five-member band.

Kalup Linzy (b. 1977) is a multidisciplinary artist who utilizes familiar tropes from pop culture—notably the melodrama found in soap operas—to highlight the complexities of race, gender, sexuality, and class. Linzy originally released his video shorts episodically on YouTube, which allowed viewers to follow the trajectory of the characters in, for example, his series All My Churen (2003).
