Perspectives 165:
Contents Under Pressure

On View: February 27 – June 10, 2009

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston's Teen Council presents their sixth exhibition of work by Houston-area teens titled Perspectives 165: Contents Under Pressure. Tasked with openly interpreting the exhibition theme of containers and containment, more than forty teen-aged artists are represented with works ranging from photography and painting to sculpture and video.

Artists such as Corrin Barnes, Michelle de Villalobos, Alex Goss, Nick Hargrave, Mae Nasser, and Eliseo Orta used photography to depict their version of containment. The young woman in Corrin Barnes's photograph Stressed pours a pitcher of water over her head seemingly to cool herself off. Alex Goss's portraits obscure the subject's face using materials such as balloons, bandages, filters, and plastic as adornment. Anthony Hurlburt's richly textured painting Bound Paprika Seeds incorporates seed pods, wire, and modeling paste. Randy Palmer's Amber Nike Container of Dreams alters the popular fitness shoe from fashion into sculpture. Masiel Cruz, Ashley Gonzalez, Erica Hernandez, and Gabriela Rodriguez—students from the same high school—worked collaboratively to create a dilapidated home titled Ike's Leftovers using twigs, roof shingle, and tape, among others.

Artist Dario Robleto was chosen to jury the show, which received almost 300 submissions. “It was very difficult to narrow down the list,” said Robleto. “Their creativity in interpreting the theme was impressive. The work highlighted the broad range of perspectives represented, and I'm happy that the artists have the opportunity to show the work in a museum environment.”
