The Black Man Project is founded on three main pillars of release, affirmation, and veneration, where men can navigate conversations relating to the themes of modern-day masculinity, cultural healing through creative practice, and the power in mental health. The collective aims to facilitate meaningful opportunities for dialogue and intentional programming reflective of the needs of the community at Freedmen’s Town. Throughout their CAMHLAB residency, their programs and subsequent installations will be built on community connection and partnerships to serve and benefit the community.

About The Black Man Project
The Black Man Project is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, arts, and mental health organization rooted in creating safe spaces for healthy conversation and exploring the nuances that affect Black men and boys. The Black Man Project was a vision seeded by founder Brian Ellison in answering the call for men of color, specifically Black men in their understanding of “being enough” in their worth in society. The organization’s work, though rooted in Houston, Texas, has organized salon dinners and site-specific activations in cities all over the United States, Brian Ellison’s documentary film UnMASKulinity, yoga, arts workshops, living installations, and group therapy sessions. Along with Creative Director Anthony Suber and Strategic Planning Director Marlon Hall, The Black Man Project focuses its work to serve all men across the diaspora.
About CAMHLAB at Freedmen’s Town
CAMHLAB at Freedmen’s Town is an onsite artist-in-residency program that aims to highlight, honor, and animate the histories and stories of Freedmen’s Town, a neighborhood established in 1865 by over 1,000 formerly enslaved people that is now recognized as Houston’s first Heritage District. In line with HFTC x CAMH’s goals, CAMHLAB at Freedmen’s Town aims to generate research, contextualize, and connect artists and the general public to the stories of Freedmen’s Town through month-long residencies.
