The Houston Jazz Collective will be mining the origins of Southern art and jazz in a special presentation featuring the artwork of Jack Whitten, an artist featured in The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse. The work will be accompanied by music from thirty-year veteran of The Duke Ellington Orchestra Texas Tenor Shelley Carrol; four-time Grammy winner bassist Tim Ruiz; and New Orleans native, member of the BB King Orchestra, The NOLA Resistance and the first on-call jazz pianist Darrell Lavigne. From John Coltrane, Les McCann, Miles Davis, and Cannonball Adderley to rap and hip hop, the Collective will take you on a journey through the South and across time.

Following immediately after the concert will be a screening of the film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, at 7:45PM. We encourage you to stay and join us for a movie night at the Museum!

Food provided by Umbrella Fellas will be available for purchase throughout the night.

Safety and Accessibility

This event will will take place on CAMH’s plaza on the corner of Montrose and Bissonet. The plaza’s surface is large gravel. There is some built-in seating and a few chairs will be available, but we strongly encourage guests to bring their own seating (chairs or thick blankets). Seating will be socially distanced and masks are recommended throughout the event. Please review CAMH’s safety protocols here.

About the Houston Jazz Collective

The Houston Jazz Collective is the brainchild of Shelley Carrol and Andre Hayward. Its mission is to enrich and expand the jazz community through performance, education, and advocacy. The Collective takes on many forms but strives to always feature a luminary artist in the jazz world.

About Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

Six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) is a tenacious girl who lives with her tough but loving father, Wink (Dwight Henry), in a remote Delta community. When Wink succumbs to a mysterious malady, the fierce and determined girl bravely sets out on a journey to save him. However, Hushpuppy’s quest is hindered by a “busted” universe with rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and an army of fearsome prehistoric beasts on the loose. Desperate to repair the structure of her world, the tiny hero must learn to survive an unstoppable catastrophe of epic proportions.

Featuring an awards-touted performance from the young star, Quvenzhané Wallis, it glows with an irrepressible and life-affirming power that has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide.
