Cumbias y Contemporary Art
About
Join us for a dance party at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) celebrating Hispanic Heritage and contemporary art.
Come by early for a tour of Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream… by CAMH curator Patricia Restrepo. Then, spend the afternoon at CAMH filled with art making and live music. Enjoy a journey through the history of cumbia by Houston, Texas-based Roots Cumbia Researchers Juan Torres and Ramiro Rodriguez (SONIDO BAYOÚ), followed by a live street cumbia roots set by SON BAYOÚ.
You can also participate in a drop-in experience facilitated by Kitchen Table Puppets & Press in collaboration with Lualo Studio and the ACLU of Texas. Paint colorful endangered plants of the borderlands on large-scale wooden panels that will tour across Texas, while sharing stories and learning about how environmental and social struggles are interconnected. All ages and levels of artistic experience are welcome to join this program and workshop.
Houston-based local community internet radio station, Ice House Radio, will live broadcast the DJ set in partnership with CAMH and members of SONIDO BAYOÚ.
