About Claire Webb
Claire is a Houston-forged artist currently pursuing an MFA in Metal (Contemporary Jewelry) at SUNY New Paltz in New York State. She completed her undergraduate degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing at The University of Houston in 2005 under Val Link. Claire’s work explores how optically rich material manipulations can evoke a sense of magic, mystery, and power. A reverential and intuitive approach to materials leads to the discovery of new possibilities: translucent and iridescent plastics are layered to create mysterious optical effects; highly refined porcelain or specialty silicone disguises itself as junk food; and articulate structures bounce, wiggle, and shimmer. Utilizing a personal visual language these objects of inquiry create poetic moments, and regard the nature of truth, knowledge, and perception. They call upon the viewer to question material relationships and invite us to gaze through luminous layers or distorted reflections and be transported. Claire has recently been included in the exhibitions Object Permanence at the Baltimore Jewelry Center, and When Worn at the Melton Gallery in Oklahoma.
