Perspectives 152: 4 Artists 4 Stories @ Nina and Michael Zilkha Gallery

Four Artists, Four Stories brings together the work of Michael Bise, Darryl Lauster, Janaki Lennie, and Soody Sharifi in the first museum presentation for each. All are recent graduates of the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Houston, and all manifest an interest in mastering the techniques and conventions of their chosen media – drawing, sculpture, painting, and photography, respectively  in order to challenge the ideological weight acquired by these disciplines in the course of their histories.

These four artists push the limits of these languages and articulate their life experiences more directly, as they respond to today’s political and social conservatism and revisionism. Interjecting narratives into their work and engaging with the socio-cultural contexts in which their lives have evolved–both at home and abroad–they confront contemporary psychological anxieties and cultural paradoxes head on.
