Serious Work with Julia Barbosa Landois
About
Join us for a performance by the artist Julia Barbosa-Landois as part of the exhibition Right Here, Right Now: San Antonio. Serious Work satirically contrasts the banalities of parental life with the performance artist persona, using a smartphone as mediator and monkey wrench. The 30-minute performance begins by invoking 1970’s era endurance works, only to unravel audience expectations with irony and humor.
Please note these performances contain nudity. The audience will be required to check-in cell phones, cameras, and tablets with a staff attendant during the 30-minute program.
Julia Barbosa Landois is a performance, installation, and video artist who recently relocated to Houston. Her multidisciplinary works have been featured in galleries, museums and performance festivals throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Her awards include grants from Artpace and the Artist Foundation of San Antonio, and residencies at the Santa Fe Art Institute (USA), Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (Norway), and Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Germany). In 2007, Barbosa Landois returned to her native San Antonio and spent the next decade there, working as an artist, mercenary professor, preparator, gallery assistant, and – contrary to popular assumptions regarding the artist brain – a math tutor.
