Instructions
01. Brainstorm
To begin, pick a family member or friend you want to collaborate to create a shape poem with. Together, discuss a subject you would like to explore in your poem. You could pick a fun-sounding word, write about a relationship that is important to both of you, or write about an object or place that is interesting to you.
02. Write a Poem Together
Now that you have picked your subject, think about what words and phrases come to mind and create a first draft. Say the words and phrases that you have written aloud to workshop your poem. Write and rewrite until your poem feels complete.
03. Draw Shape Template
A shape poem can be created using all shapes and sizes, using organic or distinguishable shapes. Now that you have written your poem, think about which shapes come to mind that remind you of your theme. Then, select one simple shape that represents the subject of your poem. Draw your chosen shape to create your poem template. Remember to create a shape that will fit the text of your poem.
04. Create Your Poem
Write the text of your poem so that it sits within your shape. Be as creative as you wish in fitting the text within your shape. Read the poem aloud again to additional family and friends.
