Online Spring Break Family Day | Texas Remixed

Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is suspending all public events to support community-wide efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. As a result, we are looking for ways to bring some of the fun activities to you virtually.

Inspired by the exhibition Slowed and Throwed: Records of the City Through Mutated Lenses, participants will experiment with shape and pattern to create mini collages of the great state of Texas.

Below is our instructional guide for hosting our Family Day activity at home.

Slowed and Throwed features unconventional photography and new media created by strategies paralleling the musical methods of the late Houston legend DJ Screw. In their photo-adjacent practices the visual artists appropriate, mash-up, collage, and mutate photographic inputs, in addition to slowing time.

Materials

Paper for background (construction paper, card stock, copy paper, etc.)

Paper for collaging (magazines, books, scrap paper, etc.)

Adhesive (craft clue, glue sticks, tape)

Drawing utensils (crayons, colored pencils, markers, pens)

Scissors

Instructions

01. LAY OUT MATERIALS

Find a place at home where you can safely layout your materials and comfortably work on your artwork.

02. SELECT PHOTOS/CREATE IMAGES

Take your time to look through your books and magazines. Choose images you want to use that represent your vision of Texas. If photos are not available to you, draw images, write text, or create shapes. Tear or cut out for your collage materials.

03. ARRANGE IMAGES

Select a layout, then arrange your images. Glue or tape down your images. Use tape as a border to bring focus to images or drawings you want to highlight.

04. PERSONALIZE

Using your drawing materials, add color, text, and patterns to “remix” your final representation of Texas.

05. SHARE

Take a picture and share your work! Be sure to tag us using the hashtags #MuseumAtHome #ConnectWithCAMH
