The Triangle
About
Join artist Tay Butler for a live performance of The Triangle.
The Triangle is an experience that simulates a live basketball contest. Spoken word, choreography, sound, and video installation recreate the chaos of an NBA game, while investigating one central concern: how did basketball become so important to Black people?
Since its inception in 1891, basketball served the purpose of defining personhood and influencing people to lean into community and spirituality. Originally created to help redefine white American manhood and Christianity, the sport has since grown to define communities of all nationalities and creeds. But since the 1970s, basketball has officially been directly tethered to Black culture, identity, and possibility. This ”triangle”, along with other relational triangles of American history, helps tell a story about struggle, reinvention, and how to use the game to win.
