Visual Storytelling | Virtual Drop-In Experience

Due to CAMH’s suspension of in-person public gatherings, a modified presentation of this art-making activity premiered online.

Inspired by the exhibition Garrett Bradley: American Rhapsody, create a storyboard to illustrate your own family narrative.

Below is our instructional guide for hosting our Drop-In Experience at home.

Garrett Bradley films, AKA and Alone, include themes of family and Southern Culture inspired by the real-life stories of her subjects.

Think of a powerful family memory.

Illustrate your story.

Materials:

Paper for storyboard (construction paper, card stock, copy paper, etc.)

Paper for collaging (magazines, scrap paper, etc.)

Adhesive (craft clue, glue sticks, tape)

Drawing utensils (crayons, colored pencils, markers, pens)

Scissors

Instructions:

01. LAY OUT MATERIALS

Find a place at home where you can safely layout your materials and comfortably work on your storyboard.

02. SELECT PHOTOS/CREATE IMAGES

Take your time to look through your magazines to choose photos that remind you of your family narrative. If photos are not available to you, draw images that remind you of your family narrative. Cut out these images and shapes for your storyboard.

03. ARRANGE IMAGES

Select a layout, then arrange your images. Glue or tape down your images to bring your family narrative to life.

04. PERSONALIZE

Using your drawing materials, add color, text, and patterns to enhance your storyboard.

05. SHARE

Take a picture and share your work!
