Join artist Stacey Allen for a community dance and movement workshop at the historic DeLUXE Theater located in the 5th Ward Cultural Arts District.
This program is part of a series of dance workshops presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Ming Smith: Feeling the Future. Each workshop is led by a different local choreographer. All ages and abilities are welcome.
Gathering cultural knowledge from a multitude of experiences such as technique classes rooted in Afro-Modern dance, praise dance traditions across the Diaspora, and somatic practices, Movement, Memory, Migration will pull from the archival memories in our bodies and create new memories. This class will flow seamlessly from breathing techniques to jubilant ring shout choreography. Keeping the traditions of Alvin Ailey’s mantra that dance should be delivered back to the people, this class is open to all.
This event is free to attend, but RSVPs are encouraged as space is limited.

About Stacey Allen
Stacey Allen is a performance artist, curator, and advocate for arts education all while being a wife and mother to three children. Maintaining her artistic practice while navigating motherhood has come with challenges, but integrating the art of mothering with her insistence on telling Black stories through movement and material culture has been worth the while. She is Founder and Creative Director of Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective and also serves as the Director of Artistic Programming at Harris County Cultural Arts Council. She was a 2022–23 Project Freeway Fellow with DiverseWorks and presented The Fairytale Project at SXSW EDU 2023.
Major support for Ming Smith: Feeling the Future is provided by the Terra Foundation for American Art and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support is provided by Art Dealers Association of America Foundation.
