Picturing the funeral of professional boxer and activist Muhammad Ali, this disparate collection of mourners lament the loss of an icon who stood up to racism and American imperialism, while themselves becoming the ordinary faces tasked with his legacy. Oni Blair, director of ACLU of Texas, reflects on how her early career led her to view everyday individuals as agents of change. 

As a student in college, at that point in my life I thought the only way to effect 

change was to be a civil rights lawyer. And one day an attorney asked me to go to take notes at the city council meeting, because they didn’t like going to city council meetings. They can be very harried and unorganized and a lot of people. And I went in not knowing what to expect. And I saw people from every walk of life, from every part of the city, going to talk about with these elected officials, what they wanted for their neighborhoods, whether it was trash being picked up or some city ordinance that they thought would protect them. And I thought it was so fascinating that regular people just like me come together to talk to each other and figure out an agenda together and real life people who I thought had so much power to pay attention to them.

Cuando era estudiante en la universidad, en ese momento de mi vida, creía que la única manera de lograr un cambio era ser abogada de derechos civiles. Y un día, un abogado me pidió que fuera a tomar notas en la reunión del consejo municipal, porque a ellos no les gustaba ir a las reuniones del consejo municipal. Pueden ser muy ajetreados y desorganizados y hay mucha gente. Y fui sin saber qué esperar. Y vi gente de todos los ámbitos de la vida, de todas partes de la ciudad, que iban a hablar con estos funcionarios electos sobre lo que querían para sus vecindarios, ya sea que se recogiera la basura o alguna ordenanza municipal que pensaran que los protegería. Y pensé que era tan fascinante que personas normales como yo se reunieran para hablar entre sí y elaborar una agenda juntos y personas de la vida real que pensé que tenían tanto poder para prestarles atención.
