Artists Adriana Corral and Vincent Valdez collaborated on the creation of this series of work. Here to discuss its indication of hope and femininity is Sarah Labowitz, scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington D.C.

A single person’s murder by the police can have wider societal ripples and also the way the viewer engages with it requires you to look in “the hole” yourself, calling back on the past and bringing us into our present historical and political context. Adriana has used the Madonna figure multiple times in her practice and she comes to it in part because so many women she talks to view the Madonna as a refuge and a touch stone in times of stress. And It is easy I think to be seduced by the darkness in America society, and those themes are certainly present in his work, what I like about the Madonna, in particular, is that it also captures the optimism about where things may go from here and that the challenges we are facing are not unidimensional that there is hope and possibility and future orientation in the work as much as there is an honesty about the past and the difficulties we face right now.

El asesinato de una sola persona a manos de la policía puede tener amplias repercusiones sociales y, además, la forma en que el espectador se involucra con él requiere que uno mismo mire dentro del hoyo, invocando el pasado y llevándonos a nuestro contexto histórico y político actual.

Adriana ha utilizado la figura de la Virgen en múltiples ocasiones en su práctica y llega a ella en parte porque muchas mujeres con las que habla ven a la Virgen como un refugio y una piedra de toque en tiempos de estrés.

Y creo que es fácil dejarse seducir por la oscuridad de la sociedad estadounidense, y esos temas están ciertamente presentes en su obra. Lo que me gusta de la Virgen, en particular, es que también captura el optimismo de hacia dónde pueden ir las cosas a partir de ahora y que los desafíos que enfrentamos no son unidimensionales, que hay esperanza, posibilidad y orientación hacia el futuro en la obra tanto como hay una honestidad sobre el pasado y las dificultades que enfrentamos en este momento.
