Alberto Careaga, an artist, arts access advocate, community organizer, and Director of Education at Art League Houston, reflects on what it means to be a Made Man in the 21st century:

I would see glimpses of they’re not all fighters. Maybe one of them is a fighter, but beyond that, they may be prisoners of war, or they may be captives, they may be in prison, right?

And I started to think about the title itself Made Men. In my mind, thought of what that meant in, in this realm, I saw some sort of pop-cultureness pop out, you know Good Fellows, Sopranos, that’s where my mind went where you know if you think about this concept of the “Made Man” its sort of like a honor, right? You are given this sort of title right? But within this context, it’s like they are given this title but what matter of respect are they actually getting right? So like are we actually thinking of them as every day men like also experiences intense emotions at the same time.

Veía destellos de que no todos son luchadores. Tal vez uno de ellos lo sea, pero más allá de eso, pueden ser prisioneros de guerra, o pueden estar cautivos, pueden estar en prisión, ¿no? Y comencé a pensar en el título en sí, Hombres Icónicos. Y en mi mente, pensé en lo que eso significaba en este ámbito, vi una especie de cultura pop que surgió, ya sabes, Goodfellas, Los Soprano, ahí es donde mi mente se dirigió a donde sabes que si piensas en este concepto de Hombre Icónico es como un honor, ¿verdad? Te dan este tipo de título, ¿verdad? Pero dentro de este contexto, es como si les dieran este título, pero ¿sabes qué tipo de respeto están recibiendo realmente? Entonces, en realidad estamos pensando en ellos como hombres comunes y corrientes que también experimentan emociones intensas al mismo tiempo.
