The City I (La ciudad I)

Description

After viewing Philip Guston’s 1969 painting titled The City Limits, which depicts hooded Ku Klux Klan members in a car, Vincent Valdez wondered how many generations of artists will have to address the racial violence and hatred that is rooted in American society. In this painting, Valdez challenges us to reckon with the legacies of white supremacy embedded in every aspect of our modern consumer-driven culture. Roberto Tejada, poet, writer, art historian, and faculty at the University of Houston, reflects on the title, The City.
