After viewing Philip Guston’s 1969 painting titled The City Limit, which depicts hooded Ku Klux Klan members in a car, Vincent Valdez began to wonder how many generations of artists will have to address the racial violence and hatred that is rooted in American society. Valdez’s work serves as a mirror for America, a country that likes to consider itself post-racial. Instead, Valdez challenges us to reckon with the legacies of white supremacy embedded in every aspect of our modern consumer-driven culture. Dr. Roberto Tejada, poet, writer, art historian, and faculty at the University of Houston, reflects on the title, The City:

But the city is in the background, we see the lights way in the background of the painting but if it's entitled the city it’s because the city must have some kind of force. And I think the way that I like to read work is that we are so dumbfounded and shocked by the hooded figures that we forget that actually they’re going back to that city without their hoods. And they are going to be the secretaries, the accountants, the police officers, the everyday citizens, that make up the metropolis in this case. So that though we are horrified by their seemingly brazen show of racial hatred, and one of the middle figures is actually without his hood and we see his eye looking at us, almost as if its a wink to the viewer which I think makes it even more upsetting and unsettling to witness this interruption of this scene. 

Though this work comes from a confrontation with fictionalized Ku Klux Klan members, Valdez had his own experience confronting white nationalists when he was 16 years old after finishing his shift working at a movie theater in San Antonio, Texas. 

Sean Fitzpatrick relates Valdez’s lived experience to what you might feel with these figures looming over you. Fitzpatrick is a psychotherapist and Executive Director of the Jung Center in Houston, Texas and right next door to CAMH, where he works at the intersection of the arts and mental health:

One of the ways that we can experience it is to be overwhelmed by our own really physical experience of threat, and those physical experiences look like what we now call fight, flight, freeze. They are physiological responses that happen that our sympathetic nervous system kicks on to protect us. And that can happen to us even as we just view a work of Vincent’s that we experience that feeling of threat. And our bodies motivate us to try to do something about it 

And Vincent’s experience gives us another option than simply be - feeling victimized or feeling in terror or helpless before this threatening figure. So Vincent’s response was to experience it as a call to action that was galvanizing for him. I can tell this story and I can make sure that others are aware that this is real. This is real and it's really still happening in our community.

Pero la ciudad está al fondo, vemos las luces del camino en el fondo del cuadro, pero si se titula la ciudad es porque la ciudad debe tener algún tipo de fuerza. Y creo que la forma en que me gusta leer la obra es que estamos tan atónitos y conmocionados por las figuras encapuchadas que olvidamos que en realidad están regresando a esa ciudad sin sus capuchas. De modo que, aunque nos horroriza su demostración aparentemente descarada de odio racial, y una de las figuras del medio en realidad no tiene capucha y vemos su ojo mirándonos, casi como si fuera un guiño al espectador, creo que hace que sea aún más perturbador e inquietante presenciar esta interrupción de esta escena. 

Aunque esta obra surge de una confrontación con miembros ficticios del Ku Klux Klan, Valdez tuvo su propia experiencia de confrontación con nacionalistas blancos cuando tenía 16 años, después de terminar su turno de trabajo en un cine en San Antonio, Texas.

Y la experiencia de Vincent nos da otra opción que simplemente sentirnos víctimas o sentirnos aterrorizados o indefensos ante esta figura amenazante. Así que la respuesta de Vincent fue experimentarlo como un llamado a la acción que lo galvanizó. Puedo contar esta historia y puedo asegurarme de que otros sean conscientes de que esto es real. Esto es real y realmente sigue sucediendo en nuestra comunidad.
