Vincent Valdez creates these monumental paintings out of individuals he views as quote “fighting the good fight for his fellow citizen and noncitizen.” Here, contributors to the audio guide respond to the prompt of who they view as a “New American”, fighting for a better future who cannot be lost to history. Dr. Dwight Watson, professor Emeritus at Texas State University, wrote the 2005 book titled Race and the Houston Police Department, 1930-1990: Change Did Come. Dr. Dwight Watson responds to this prompt:

For me, coming back to Houston, a city I have grown to love, been here since 1981. The New American image to me is for us to not forget Lula White and William Alexander Lawson, pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, and Lula Madison Belle White, leader of the state NAACP who dies from a heart attack in the 1950s made Houston one of the most important NAACP chapters in the South. We can’t let this history die. 

I think if we start paying attention and memorialize these communities that have now been kind of gentrified out of existence not let the Fourth Ward go away, not let Third Ward go away to gentrification because these communities mean something. Because if we lose all the people who lived in the inner city to Missouri City, what happens to Houston? Who is the next person who is going to negotiate how we will fix things in this city?

Here Dr. Roberto Tejada, poet, writer, art historian, and faculty at the University of Houston, considers a “New American” to be 

Someone like Meshell Ndegeocello whose work has always addressed the dispossessed, the ways in which African Americans, LGBTQ folk have been marginalized from society and this new album that is be released uses the thought of James Baldwin, of Audre Lorde, quoted quite prominently in the tracks. And I think that even Meshell Ndegeocello as an artist herself has followed a root on integrity in which celebrity was of less interest than being authentic and genuine in so far as her musical practice is concerned. I would choose someone like Meshell Ndegeocello as a “New American”.
